Today I want to tackle a topic that most of us can relate to: Why Is Social Media Important?
Certainly you have thought of this question regarding your online business.
No surprise here, everyone has different concerns when they hear the words social media.
“I’m too late in the game.”
“It’s only young people posting photos of puppies and selfies – people my age don’t use it.”
“I’m resigned; I know I need it but I have no interest in doing it.”
“I don’t have the time to become an expert in social media – it changes every week.”
So, are we all wasting our precious time? Are we just creating content that no one will read and adding needless daily stress for ourselves?
Not at all my friend. In today’s post you’ll learn the eight social media mindset shifts that will make you never question social return on investment (ROI) ever again!
+ YOUR COMPETITION IS DOING IT
My favorite way to close the deal, and it’s numero uno: when people are deciding between hiring you and another company, they will go with the company with the better online presence. That company sends out this loud and clear message: ‘I’m open for business, world, and I’m ready to talk to you!’ You spend time writing the perfect blog post, put great effort into your newsletter, and your photos are amazing, but social media is where you get to connect with potential customers.
+ BOOST SEARCH ENGINE RANKING
To give you some clarity: Today, all of the digital world works together (it was not always this way). Search Engine Optimization (SEO) works not only with your website, your hard-earned keywords, and perfect URL structures, but it factors in your social media accounts as well. The more social media pages you have, with current content, the more your company will show up in search results. How wonderful!
+ COMPLIMENTS THE MOBILE REVOLUTION
This is 2016 people, and digital marketing constantly changes. Google recently removed all of the right sidebar advertisements so it’s own website looks better on mobile platforms. That was huge. Also, mobile and responsive compatible websites are now the only sites that get ranked by Google. Since social media is built specifically around mobile platforms, don’t you think that’s a good place to market your business?
+ NURTURES A DIRECT CONNECTION
You need, and want, a direct line of communication with customers. Social media encourages a natural relationship between your business and your potential customers. Posting an educational story that sparks enough emotion for someone to “like, comment, or share” starts the process. Thomas Smith, in his book “Successful Advertising,” makes the following reflection on effective frequency: it can take as many as 20 times to hear a message before someone buys from you. And that’s OK, you are not in business for a quick buck, you are in business for the long haul, and now you know, social media is a big part of the game.
+ PROVIDES CONTINUOUS VALUE
Social media helps you build a buzz-worthy brand, and a loyal following. It is the place where people look for information. I know countless people who might not post to their personal pages much, but because of the way social is structured, they are on social to find articles, get the news, or just see what is going on in the world. And because you are not just posting fluff on all of these platforms, you are posting content with a purpose, you have a strategy, you are providing continuous value. That makes you highly regarded. Social media for business is different from social media for your personal life: people have the tendency to overshare nonsense on personal accounts, you know that, but in business – sharing is caring!
+ LEARN WHAT PEOPLE WANT
How about this one for a ROI: learning what your potential customers want. Jackpot people, jackpot. People are curious, and very vocal online. You must answer every question that comes your way and turn all obstacles into opportunities. Then you will be left with a stronger and more purposeful business. Look at it this way, when people tell you what they want that’s a free idea for you! For example, if you had a contest on Facebook, and everyone wanted your product in black – in addition to the blue and yellow you currently offer, go make it in black! Or, are people are asking you the same question over and over about your service? Write a blog post about it – give your readers what they want.
+ DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE
Think of social media as an integral part of your marketing effort. It’s just another way to extend your reach. Today, people do not go directly to websites like they did in the past. More than likely, they will see your impressive article somewhere else (ahem on social media), and then click a link to get to your website. Website traffic from social media can be directly measured through analytics. And the more you share content online, the more people you will reach. Remember this: social media business accounts are not there to only post links to your site. Use the rule of thirds: 1/3 Provide Educational Content, 1/3 Links To Your Website, 1/3 Provide Additional Value.
+ BECOME THE INDUSTRY EXPERT
Why yes you are the expert you smart thing you. No matter if you are targeting Fortune 500 CEO’s, stay-at-home parents, or solar panel-loving hippies, people are searching for answers. You are laser focused on what your business represents and there is a very specific set of information in that head of yours. Maybe you have won awards, are published in highly regarded journals, or you are always asked questions about a specific subject. People know you are an expert, and they want you to provide them with solutions to their problems.
+ BONUS: IT’S FUN!
65% of the people in the WORLD are visual learners. And how nice of social media platforms to give us somewhere to visually express ourselves. Thanks Mark Z! You can go on social in the morning, and see what your favorite business is up to behind the scenes, you can laugh at a silly video that also makes you think, you can learn about a new tool or technique to grow your bank account, you can see a photo of an exotic location that is offering a conference you need to attend – yes, it is a fun place to be!
While there is a ton to be said about this topic it ultimately boils down to one thing and one thing only: You have to know that you have the ability to put all of your energy and resources out into this world – onto the platforms the world is giving you to make you succeed. It’s brilliant!
